Farmer Marty’s Stage Debut

Hear it here, folks.  Farmer Marty tells the story of himself in the life he lived before this one.  A monthly event in Boise called “Story Story Night” invites people to tell true stories on a theme.  Last month’s theme was “Rights of Passage,”  and Farmer Marty was the only storyteller with the nerve to tell the right of passage story, for all humans.

Click here to hear the Podcast.  He’s the second storyteller, and you can fast forward through the first (longer) one.

First Farmers’ Market Menu

The farmers’ market is back in business!  Global Gardens doesn’t have any veggies ready yet, but I was down there this weekend selling CSA shares, and picked up some things from the skilled farmers who had them.   Rhubarb and herbs came from Marty’s garden.  We came home and did a nice big bar-bee for all of Marty’s housemates.

Here’s what we had:

  • Mutton Burgers with Rhubarb Barbecue Sauce (you could use beef!)
  • Grilled Asparagus and Parsnips
  • Wild Honey Rhubarb Cake with Strawberries and Cream

Mutton Burgers

  • 1 lbs ground mutton
  • 1tbs chopped sage
  • 1tbs chopped parsley
  • 3 chopped garlic cloves

Make patties and smash into herb mix. Grill!

Wild Honey Rhubarb BBQ Sauce

  • 2Tbsp honey
  • 1 cup chopped rhubarb
  • 1 onion Juliane
  • 1/2 pint BBQ Sauce (prefer Katie’s Homemade)

Saute onions and right when they start to turn brown add rhubarb and honey cook until rhubarb is broken down then add BBQ sauce and let simmer 5 minutes.

Grilled Asparagus and Parsnips:

Easy.  Chop them, toss in olive oil, and throw them along the edges of the grill.  Season with salt and pepper.  Asparagus is perfectly in season now, and Rice Family Farms had some Parsnips overwintered from last year.  Have you ever eaten a parsnip? I hadn’t, so I decided to try them!  They’re kind of like carrots, with a tang, very good flavor.

Thnx Grammy!

I stood on the corner of 90th South 2700 West, Salt Lake City. My mother held my hand as we waited for the bus. It was 1983, I was 10 years old. As the bus came to a complete stop in front of us, it let out a loud, “Psst” like the air being knocked out of a hydraulic dinosaur. The doors opened and I entered the bus alone. My mother stood on the corner waving. It was the first time I left the neighborhood on my own.

My mother and I had made the bus ride to my grandmother’s a million times in my 10 years. I knew the way so well I could of walked it if it wasn’t such a long distance, still, I was nervous. I knew I would have no trouble getting off at the right spot to make the transfer, but still, I kept an eager eye on our every turn. I made it and grandma picked me up at the stop by her house.

Immediately after exiting I happily embraced my grandmother and relax in her warmth and affection. All the excitement and travel had made me hungry. I wanted to eat. “Grandma,” I announced, “I am starving. Let’s go to Subway.”

Shocked, as if I’d said the F-word, she said with disgust “Subway! I will make you a sandwich better than any damned Subway!” And she did.

I still remember that sandwich and about everything else my grandmother fed me, like sourdough pancakes, tuna fish with sweet pickles, and raw goat milk (way before it was hip). But mostly what I remember is how much better my grandmother’s food was than any damned corporate chain restaurant. Twenty eight years later my grandmother’s food is the bench mark of my pallet. My culinary skills are built on her foundation. Long after my grandmother can no longer cook for me or the family, she’ll still be feeding us, I have her recipes!

For me this blog is what I have learned while trying to cook like my grandma.

Welcome to our Blog!

Here it is, fans.  Our long-awaited food/travel/farm/crafting/adventure blog.

The idea for this blog really began about a year ago, when my boss announced that I would be getting a new cell phone for work.  And that it would be a “smart” phone.  She’d been bugging me forever to get one that had internet access, because, “Wouldn’t it be great if you could check your email from the farm?”  No!  What would be great about that, exactly?

So, anyway, my phone was up for renewal and she ordered me a fancy new Droid. Work applications aside, my favorite feature of the new super phone was its ability to take photos and instantly upload them onto Facebook.  No computer cord or lengthy upload process required.  Marty and I were soon photographing every dinner we created with food from the farm, in order to inspire our dear fans to buy vegetables from our farms and cook them into similarly delicious and photogenic meals.

Marty loved it when we got a lot of comments.  Some of the comments were things like, “recipe, please…” and “Katie, please get a food blog already and stop torturing us with photos and no recipes.”  So, here we are.  Marty says send us $5 and we’ll send you a recipe.

Here are some highlights of our food photos from the past year!

Mmmmm!  Hungry yet?  We look forward to sharing lots of recipes and adventures with you in 2011.  Happy New Year everybody!
